What each one sees as beautiful or interesting, is very much an individual response. I choose to paint what I see as unusual, in form, colour or composition, that which catches the eye, stimulates the imagination and motivates me to work. The challenge is to go beyond what is visible to express feelings and emotions.

Subjects that I have painted include landscapes, beach scenes, rocks and grasses, that evoke an awareness of the enduring yet fragility of nature itself and how it relates to life in general. More recent work, is of mannequins which reflect a lifelong interest in textiles, appealing to my love of colour, harmony and creativity but also a visual vulnerability reminding us of the uncertainty of life.

The paintings are pastels which give a luminescence to each piece - the colours lush, rich and my fingers working directly on the paper - no barrier between self and painting.

My training is a series of art schools, workshops, studio sessions in a variety of mediums for a number of years. The work reflects, a love of creating and challenge to go beyond reality to present a different perception.

Chéryl Poulin

Cheryl Poulin's painting style reflects her playful nature and her attention to detail. Many of her paintings can be found in private collections in the Ottawa region and as far away as Great Britain and Australia.

Born in 1962 in Montreal, Quebec she is fluent in both French and English. Cheryl’s initial creative exploration began with the decorative arts. After a few years she mastered many styles and numerous painting techniques.

More recently, her attentions are occupied with mixed media painting where she creates in an abstract and casual presentation. Practicing both styles, she keeps her skills finely honed. Cheryl loves adding texture and obscure “found” objects to her compositions of mostly acrylic paints.

Cheryl Poulin teaches from her home studio, "Earmark Purrductions Creative Studios" in a tranquil forested setting in Dunrobin, Ontario. Cheryl has been teaching for more than 12 years. Her teaching methods are well suited to the beginner, intermediate and advanced student.

The classroom always has a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere where every level of painting experience is respected.

Self taught, I recently started painting as a means of relaxation. The anticipation of accomplishment and value as an artist propels me to explore new mediums such as fabric and mirrored glass to incorporate into my paintings.

Music is my muse. The vibrancy of my work dances upon the canvas. Blocks of colour, shapes and broken lines weave together to amuse the eyes; the work is more about sensation than any particular meaning.

With each new piece, I incorporate new materials and textures to increase the depth of my work. Passionately connected to each twist and stroke of my palette knife or brush, my stories come to life.

Kathy McClure - Mixed Media Artist

Kathy has always enjoyed expressing herself creatively. For many years she tole painted, quilted, decorated and faux finished walls. She studied interior decorating and taught faux finishing classes. Her mother is very artistic and kept encouraging her to try acrylic on canvass. And that became Kathy’s passion about six years ago. She is self taught and takes classes to help her to take those mental images, or others inspired by nature, and create them on canvases.

“Colour is my trigger. I see beautiful flowers, sunsets or misty days and want to take that moment and capture the feeling that I had when I saw it. I am always taking pictures. I started painting landscapes in acrylic and have now discovered that my greatest pleasure is in abstract inspired by reality. I love experimenting with gel mediums and just about anything to add texture and interest. I also love to help other people to be creative and am doing just that regularly at a Day Hospice.”

Phyllis Moore - Abstract Artist

Phyllis has been an artist all her life, working in clay as a founding member of the Ottawa Guild of Potters. She also makes paper, which is often found in her paintings. Phyllis describes her painting style as "abstract realism". Her Paintings are textured, joyful, and colourful. Nature is a subject matter she loves to paint.

"Bright colours with their modulations and juxtapositions captivate me. They make me happy to be painting and I feel a satisfaction in living with them, and hope others do as well. Art was always a favorite subject and so it has remained a steadfast part of my life. I spent many years being a potter. I am a papermaker and have been making visual art for many years. I like the term "abstract realism" for much of my work. Lately I have been experimenting with photo transfers with mixed-media. Whatever the type of work, learning new methods and the joy of creation are utmost.”

“I love to experiment with media and imagery, mostly in an abstract fashion with bold forms and colour. Painting whatever inspires me at the moment. I incorporate fabric, beads, buttons, found objects, wire, and objects from nature into mostly acrylic paintings. I paint until I believe I am finished, then I step back, return to the canvas and paint some more. Using elements that lend the correct colour and texture to my non-objected abstract pieces, I get results that excite my eye and make me feel good. After a few days I make up my mind if the work should be signed or turned to the left and worked some more. When enough is enough, I sign it and hang it.”
